Why does block scanning range decrease over time?

From the graph-node team:

that is adjusted based on the amount of triggers for RPC. If the amount of triggers increases for a single range we decrease the range on the next iteration.
if it decreases we increase the range. It’s just a way to try and maintain an optimal range.
