Edge & Node's July/August Update

:woman_astronaut: Executive Summary

July is the first full month following The Graph’s Sunrise of Decentralized Data. The Graph Network now powers 7,000+ subgraphs. All-time high levels of network usage continues: July 19th shattered the single-day volume record with over 88 million queries served. The whole of June saw 937 million queries on the network — up 1,650% from 55 million queries in June 2023. Projects like AAVE, ENS, Art Blocks, Balancer, Snapshot, Decentraland, Lido, Messari, PancakeSwap, SushiSwap, and many others now serve their users on an internet of permissionless data. With all our focus now on improving the network, we’ve made significant advancements in Subgraph Studio, Graph Explorer, Indexer software, and protocol improvements. We are committed to continued enhancement of the developer and user experience to ensure web3 is as easy — or better yet, easier — to use than web2. See below for a summarized view into how we are supporting subgraph developers, data consumers, Indexers, and The Graph community:

Notable late June & July Accomplishments:

Studio and Explorer

  • A redesigned credit card billing signup makes payment registration now clearer than ever.
  • To streamline the subgraph publishing experience, optional choices in Studio are now hidden behind advanced toggles.
  • Graph Explorer got yet another boost for discoverability! There are now a few more sorting and filtering options on Explorer.
  • We added support for new chains: IoTeX, Rootstock, and Sei
  • In interest of continuing to support historical community usage, we upgraded 4,000+ widely-used subgraphs from the hosted service to the Network. If your subgraph was one of the automatically-upgraded subgraphs, use the subgraph upgrade flow to claim your subgraph. If you queried one of these subgraphs on the hosted service, it’s now time to update your API endpoints to continue making queries.

Indexer Software

  • There are a host of new features for graph-node that have been merged and are slated for the next release:
    • More flexibility to declarative eth_calls
    • Multiple graphman enhancements
    • Enhanced error reporting for grafted subgraphs
    • New metrics to track subgraph feature usage
    • Support for Substreams using index modules and block filters
  • Other Indexer software improvements include:
    • Indexers are now able to close subgraph allocations on unsupported networks and collect GRT query fees!
    • Scalar TAP-related code updates, enhancing network payment systems
    • Retiring references to the hosted service in Indexer docs

Protocol

  • The Graph Council transactions for full protocol support of Linea, Base, Scroll and BSC were prepared and executed.
  • To make it easier for new chains to integrate and become eligible for indexing rewards, we fully automated chain integration testing and brought more visibility to the process.
  • Many oracles, including the Subgraph Availability Oracle, were upgraded to subgraphs on the Network as a corollary to the Sunrise of Decentralized Data.
  • The first Audit for the Graph Horizon PR has begun, with lots of improvement on test coverage in the lead-up to the audit.
  • We made progress on GIPs for protocol evolution beyond Horizon.

The Graph expands outreach, participation, and technical education

  • Edge & Node had a core force in attendance at EthCC in Brussels, allowing invaluable brand-building for The Graph:
    • We hosted ZeroToDapp Day, a full-day educational hackathon event full of technical workshops
    • Our Sunrise party was a top-tier extracurricular event, receiving glowing feedback from the community
  • The House of Web3 continued its tradition as a beacon of community and learning in the decentralized world:
    • Collaborated with Stanford Blockchain Club and LightDAO, furthering networking outreach within the community
    • Finalized plans for a large scale AI conference in August with Base AI
    • Organized two “Crypto Mondays” events and a crypto accounting “Lunch & Learn” event for the web3 community
  • If you missed top-tier press coverage of the Sunrise, it’s worth checking out The Block.

What’s Next:

  • In accordance with GIP-0067, L1 deprecation is imminent, meaning that because 100% of indexing rewards have moved to The Graph Network on Arbitrum, the protocol will operate entirely on L2 within the next few weeks.
  • Improve the setups of IPFS, Upgrade Indexer, and Studio billing
  • Publish GIPs to propose Network improvements in the arenas of indexing fees, the future of issuance, and other incentives as the protocol evolves toward and beyond Horizon
  • Continue supporting the Horizon audit
  • Release MVPs for Direct Indexer Payments and Multi-service registry
  • New “Endpoints” section in Studio with all endpoints in one place, query examples, and docs
  • Scope work for our contributions to the Knowledge Graph and web3 dapp framework
  • Educate about The Graph at Devcon 2024
  • Create videos and guides specific to Delegation, as part of a brand new ecosytem page
  • Begin working on a new Webhooks education series, supporting the upcoming beta feature release
  • Introduce enhanced account management
