Rewards Eligibility Oracle: A Two-Month Retrospective

The Graph Foundation published a two-month retrospective on the Rewards Eligibility Oracle (REO). It reports what each eligibility step changed for Indexers, GRT and Delegators, using on-chain data from Arbitrum One and gateway query logs.

This thread is the place to discuss the results and the next step.

The three steps so far

Date (2026) Step Subgraphs
Needed Online
Notice
August 25 Step 1 1 Criteria published before launch
October 6 Step 2 5 14 days
October 27 Step 3 10 14 days

All other criteria are unchanged: 5 online days in a rolling 28-day window, HTTP 200, under 5,000 ms, and within 50,000 blocks of chainhead.

What the Data Shows

Step 1: August 25th to October 5th

  • Eligible Indexers dropped from 70 to 51 to 55 by the end of the period. Four Indexers qualified for the first time, and three of them went from serving on 0% of days to 79%.

  • 52 Indexers collected 26.11M GRT in indexing rewards. 658,987 GRT built up on the allocations of 8 Indexers that failed REO and went to the reclaim contract instead.

  • 28.37M GRT was undelegated from failing Indexers. 28.19M of it came from Indexers the oracle has never renewed, and 25.69M came from a single Delegator.

Step 2: October 6th to October 26th

  • Eligible Indexers fell from 55 to 48. Nine Indexers failed the first daily check under the new rule.

  • Rewards paid per day held steady at 636K GRT, against 622K in Step 1, while the number of Indexers paid fell from 52 to 47.

  • No Delegator added stake to a failing Indexer during the step.

Step 3: Started October 27th

  • 47 Indexers were eligible on October 29th, 4 of them in grace. Modeling projects 42.

  • Renewals last 14 days, so the full effect shows by about November 10th.

Reclaimed GRT

Before this upgrade, rewards that could not be paid were never minted. They now go to the reclaim contract (0xe26cDC4Ef915D12551ea67a7cBB838E91a24bB37). This GRT may be reintroduced to the ecosystem through protocol governance. No decision has been made on how it will be used.

For Delegators

On October 29th, 79.0M GRT was still delegated to Indexers failing REO. Delegators should check their Indexer for eligibility on the dashboard: https://reo.thegraph.com/

Feedback wanted

The Foundation will measure how the network responds to the 10-Subgraph rule before proposing the next change. One idea raised at Graph Office Hours on October 20th is to scale the minimum with each Indexer’s total stake, for example 1 Subgraph per 10M GRT with a floor. Nothing is decided yet about the next step.

Questions for this thread:

  • Should the next step raise the Subgraph minimum again, or change a different criterion?

  • How should a stake-scaled minimum treat Indexers that specialize in a few chains or Subgraphs?
